Queensbridge Road

We are committed in our Transport Strategy to make Hackney’s roads safer for everyone living, working and visiting the borough. We aim to create an environment that will encourage more walking and cycling, improve air quality and reduce emissions in the borough. For further background to these measures, see the About the project page. To find out more about how we're maintaining access to properties, why we're acting so quickly and more, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page

At Queensbridge Road, we have introduced new protected cycle lanes between Whiston Road and Albion Drive . This will help make the road safer for cyclists and encourage people to walk and cycle. The new cycle lanes link to existing protected cycle lanes, which were installed between Hackney Road and Whiston Road earlier in 2020.

To install the new protected cycle lanes, we introduced wands (flexible bollards) to separate them from the rest of the road, removed the small traffic islands near the Pownall Road junction and resurfaced the road between the Whiston Road and Albion Drive for a smoother ride.

Three existing parking bays with a capacity of seventeen (17) car spaces have been removed as part of these proposals.

A School Street at Queensbridge Primary School

In November, we have also launched a School Street on Albion Drive for Queensbridge Primary School. School Streets are schemes where the road(s) outside of a school is closed to most vehicles during school opening and closing times, helping children walk or cycle to school safely. Albion Drive, from the junction with Queensbridge Road to the junction with Albion Square, has been made a Pedestrian and Cycle Zone between 8:30-9:30am and 3:00-4:00pm, Monday to Friday, during school term time only. We have sent more details about the scheme, including eligibility for exemptions, to residents living near Queensbridge Primary School. You can find out more about School Streets at www.hackney.gov.uk/school-streets and have your say on the Queensbridge Primary School Street here .

How were the measures introduced?

We have introduced these measures from 12 October 2020. The improvements were expected to take two weeks to complete.

Have your say

The improvements were being introduced using an experimental traffic order for a maximum period of 18 months, which means you can see how the scheme works in practice before having your say.

The views of residents and businesses, including any suggested changes to how schemes operate, will be taken into account before any decision on whether or not to make the measures permanent. This process is in line with specific guidance from Transport for London, and the Department for Transport, whose guidance states that: 'authorities should monitor and evaluate any temporary measures they install, with a view to making them permanent, and embedding a long-term shift to active travel as we move from restart to recovery’.

The experimental traffic order was advertised in the London Gazette and the Hackney Gazette on 8 October 2020.

The initial engagement period on this scheme ran until 21 March 2021, however we are extending this until 1 August 2021 so residents have the opportunity to see how it operates as we emerge from lockdown and to allow as many people as possible to have their say.

To have your say, please complete the survey below or email streetscene.consultations@hackney.gov.uk . You can also write to us by sending your comments to ‘Freepost Streetscene’.

Traffic levels on Queensbridge Road

Some residents have reported increased traffic levels on Queensbridge Road since the introduction of the London Fields low traffic neighbourhood. This is partly as a result of drivers who cannot now pass through the London Fields area returning and using Queensbridge Road to get to Graham Road or Hackney Road. We expect this to reduce as sat nav apps update and drivers avoid the area completely. We apologise for any inconvenience this is causing. We are monitoring traffic levels so we can make adjustments to existing schemes where necessary.
