Laburnum Street

Please note : These turning restrictions on Laburnum Street are additional measures as part of the wider London Fields Low Traffic Neighbourhood scheme. They are being implemented under a separate experimental traffic order (ETO). Please refer to this page to comment on the first set of measures in the London Fields area.

We are committed in our Transport Strategy to make Hackney’s roads safer for everyone living, working and visiting the borough. We aim to create an environment that will encourage more walking and cycling, improve air quality and reduce emissions in the borough. For further background to these measures, see the About the project page. During the week commencing 7th September 2020, the Council implemented a number of traffic filters in London Fields to form the London Fields Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN).

Since the introduction of the London Fields LTN scheme, increases in traffic using Laburnum Street to get in and out of the LTN have been observed. To help restore traffic volumes in Laburnum Street to their normal levels, we introduced two turning restrictions into and out of the road:

  • A new ‘No Left Turn’ restriction at Laburnum Street to stop traffic, except pedal cycles and emergency services vehicles, from turning left into Queensbridge Road north
  • A new ‘No Right Turn’ restriction at Queensbridge Road north to stop traffic, except pedal cycles and emergency services vehicles, from turning right into Laburnum Street.
  • In addition, the existing ‘No Right Turn’ restriction at the Whiston Road - Kingsland Road junction has been removed to allow traffic from Whiston Road to turn right into Kingsland Road north.

The existing parking bay in Laburnum Street, nearest to the Laburnum Street - Queensbridge Road junction has been removed as part of the scheme. The parking bay had a capacity of two (2) car spaces.

We introduced these measures on 17 December 2020.

    Have your say

The measures were being introduced using an experimental traffic order for a maximum period of 18 months, which means you can see how the measures work in practice before having your say.

The views of residents and businesses, including any suggested changes to how schemes operate, will be taken into account before any decision on whether or not to make the measures permanent. This process is in line with specific guidance from Transport for London, and the Department for Transport, whose guidance states that: 'authorities should monitor and evaluate any temporary measures they install, with a view to making them permanent, and embedding a long-term shift to active travel as we move from restart to recovery’.

The initial engagement period on this scheme ran until 17 June 2021, however we are extending this until 1 August 2021 so residents have the opportunity to see how it operates as we emerge from lockdown and to allow as many people as possible to have their say.

To have your say, please complete the survey below or email streetscene.consultations@hackney.gov.uk. You can also write to us by sending your comments to ‘Freepost Streetscene’.
