Hackney School Streets Summer 2021

After considering feedback from local residents, alongside polling and traffic monitoring, the Council made the decision to make the Summer 2021 School Streets permanent. School Streets are schemes where the road outside a school is closed to most motor vehicles during school opening and closing times, helping children walk or cycle to school safely.

In autumn 2020, we introduced 33 trial School Streets outside primary schools in Hackney, bringing the total number in the borough to 42.

The accelerated programme of School Streets in Hackney helps to provide immediate protection against road danger and difficulties with social distancing around school opening and closing times; addressing the dangers of vulnerable road users being forced out into the carriageway to avoid crowding around school gates.

The School Streets implemented last autumn will support over 14,000 children to walk and cycle to school safely, protecting them from a projected increase in traffic post-lockdown and helping them to maintain social distancing as lockdown eases.

The roads around a school temporarily become a Pedestrian and Cycle Zone at set times in the morning and afternoon. Motor vehicles are not permitted to enter the road between these times, unless they have been granted an exemption.

Exemptions are available in some circumstances; including for those vehicles that are registered to an address inside a School Street zone and Blue Badge holders who need to access a property within a zone.

School Street zones are indicated by Pedestrian and Cycle Zone signs at each entry point. It is a traffic offence for non-exempt vehicles to enter a School Street zone during the operational times, and infractions can carry a penalty charge issued by an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera.

Nine schools in Hackney already have a permanent School Street: St John the Baptist School (SS1), Gayhurst Community School (SS2), Millfields Community School (SS3), Tyssen Community School (SS4), London Fields Primary School (SS5), Sebright Primary School (SS6), Southwold Primary School (SS7), St Mary’s Church of England Primary School (SS8), and William Patten Primary School (SS9).

School Streets that are launching Monday 21 June, 2021

The following School Streets are launching on 21 June 2021. The Commonplace survey for these schemes will also open on 21 June 2021. Please click on the name of the school for the operating hours and a drawing of the specific School Street scheme.
